Anaku, Walusimbi Among 14 Players Braced For Trials Abroad

Express FC captain Enock Walusimbi and KCCA FC striker Sadat Anaku headline a list of players invited for trials abroad.

Both Walusimbi and Anaku will prove their ability at Scottish side Dundee United.

The long list also has Proline’s Hakim Kiwanuka and Bright Stars youngster Ivan Irinimbabazi.

These are some of the players who impressed from Team Fundi, a Uganda select side, that toured Spain early this year in Spain.

The players have been invited by clubs in Spain, Portugal and France.

Eric Ssenjobe, Derrick Emukule, Rashid Mukungu, Raymond Onyai, Nicholas Kabonge, Alfred Onek, Ivan Ocholit and Andrew Okiring have been invited by teams in Spain and Portugal.

These will be tested at Atletico Benidorm, CF Lanucia, Intercity CF, CF Orihuela, Boavista and Velez CF.

Simon Baligeya (FC Lyon) Ivan Irinimbabazi (AS Saint Priest), Hakim Kiwanuka (Olympique Laval) and Ali Mwirusi (FC Vaulx) will go in France.

Revealing the news to the press during a briefing at Parliament, Hon. Fredrick Angura, said: “Today, I am privileged to report the results of Team Fundi, we had so many scouts who came to watch the boys. The success we have realised is that the scouts identified some talent from our team and these selected players will be travelling anytime from now.”

“We have already secured Visas and we are just waiting for clearance from the other side.”

Angura also revealed that Spanish Junior teams have expressed interest to play with Uganda counterparts.

Adding that Uganda will next year in February have an opportunity to play with Junior sides of Villarreal, Granada and Valencia among others.

Other United Kingdom junior teams – Dundee United, Stoke City and Port Vale are set to confirm friendlies.

“This started on a low note but it’s growing and already gathered momentum. And we are ready to showcase our good talent out there.”

He also revealed that some of the players who did not get trial slots from the first trip, will have a chance to showcase their talent in Canada later on.

“I want to commend the behaviour of the team we travelled with to Spain, the team returned wholesomely without causing any glitch that has been associated with Ugandan teams. No one stayed behind.”

Angura commended a couple of institutions who helped in making the trip possible – Parliament, Speaker Annet Among, NWSC, Tororo Cement, Ministry of Healthy, FUFA, NCS, Serena Kigo and Uganda Tourism Board.

About Team Fundi Project

Team Fundi was an initiative launched by President Museveni in Tororo in November 2020.

The team of selected young players went to Spain where they played four exhibition matches (won three and lost one) against Spain’s Segunda B clubs Hercules CF, Atletico Benidorm CF, CF Olihuera, and Intercity CF.

The games were played at the Estadio Municipal, Guillermo Amor Av Ciudad Deportiva and Benidorm Alicante Stadium.

The team was coached by Turkish tactician Omer Selli and under FestoWeb Sports Management.
