CECAFA Women: Burundi Beat 10-man Djibouti

Burundi 3-0 Djibouti

Sandrine Nyokuru bagged a brace as Burundi defeated Djibouti 3-0 in the opening match of the 2022 CECAFA women championship at the FUFA technical center in Njeru.

Joelle Bukuru scored from a direct free kick which beat the Djibouti goalkeeper to put Burundi in a deserved lead in the 37th minute of the game.

Burundi who already qualified to the AWCON tournament in Algeria dominated the game against Djibouti.

With just a minute after going into a 3-0 lead, Burundi dominated the game which forced Djibouti into committing several tackles.

Djibouti were reduced to 10 players as Nadia Nour was sent off for a reckless foul in the 39th minute.

In the second half of the game it was all for Burundi to take as they continued dominating giving the Djibouti goalkeeper Rokiatou Doumbia a busy day on duty as she made a couple of saves.

Doumbia was vital as she denied Joelle Bukuru a clear scoring opportunity punching her effort to the cross bar and finally saved it.

The Burundi head coach Nyokuru Gustave was excited about the win despite scoring just three goals.

“We have won our first game against Djibouti and won 3-0. We have been playing them in several friendlies and winning with a huge margin but today it was a different score and I am happy for the win,” said Burundi coach.

Burundi who already booked their slot on the AWCON tournament will use this championships as build up to the final tournament in Algeria.
