Kampala Junior Chess Open
Friday 3rd-Saturday 4th June 2022
Kembabazi Restaurant, Naguru
8 rounds – Recording
All is set for the inaugural edition of the Kampala Junior Chess Open that is scheduled to run from 3rd to 4th June 2022 at Kembabazi Restaurant in Naguru. The two-day event for Under 9, Under 11 and Under 13 age categories will have eight swiss rounds with recording which according to FA/FI Ssonko Matthias will help improve the participants’ game.
“Our objective with this tournament is to help kids improve their game while having fun. It’s important for kids to play themselves competitively as often as possible to accelerate their learning and improve their performance,” stated Ssonko.
Uganda Chess Federation Secretary General, Ojok Patrick welcomed the tournament saying with the growth in chess at the primary level, more such events are needed.
“We have seen tremendous growth in chess at the primary level to the extent that Uganda is now actively participating in continental and global children’s chess tournaments,” Ojok said
“And for us to grow the game and identify talent early enough for further development, we need to have even more tournaments for kids to compete and have fun.
“Chess is such a wonderful sport. It helps develop young children’s strategic and problem-solving skills which they will use their entire life. And it even helps kids do better in their academics. So I encourage parents to get their children into chess even as early as 6yrs because it is good for them,” Ojok added.
Deadline for registration is Wednesday 1st June 2022 and the Winners, Runners-Up and Best Girl in each category will walk away with a trophy.
