Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena has lauded Denis Onyango after the goalkeeper made history by being the first player in the league to win nine league titles.
The former Uganda Cranes goalkeeper was in the posts as Sundowns successfully defended their title with four DSTV Premiership matches following a goalless draw with Cape Town City.
“It’s very difficult to speak about Denis without being emotional because of what he has done not only for Sundowns but what he has done is incredible for these young kids that are in Uganda,” Rulani said, as quoted by SoccerLaduma.
“You’ve got to go to Uganda to understand the environment, not just from a political sense but the socio-economic background that he comes from.
“And to get someone to be the best goalkeeper on the African continent and to win that award from humble beginnings to achieve not only with Sundowns, but with Bidvest Wits and SuperSport, and that type of story is one that many footballers would be happy to write.”
The 2021/22 league title, was his sixth with Sundowns for Onyango who also clinched three with SuperSport United.
