The drivers are braced for the ‘shakedown’ that will get the 2022 Pearl of Africa Rally underway.
Federation of Motorsports Clubs of Uganda (FMU) identified Mzuri Africa, located in Namataba Mukono, as the place where the Shakedown will be held from.
The Shakedown, first of it’s kind in Uganda, is a session where drivers will test their cars and also have a chance to determine their starting positions for the Pearl Of Africa Rally. This will be based on time they record on pre-event.
It will be held on Friday, May 6 before the rally starts in Lugazi (SCOUL) sugar estate and Kasaku Tea plantations.
“The Shakedown is just 12 days away, so time is not on our side. Therefore we had to identify a venue for the shakedown, we tried to look at all different places that could host a shakedown, but we also looked more in safety, this event is not about making money and forgetting about the yellow card that is on our head,” explained FMU President Dipu Ruparelia.
“We needed a huge place where we can control the fans and keep them in one place and still be a safe event – And Mzuri ticks the boxes.
“We expect a fantastic one. The track has a lot of roads, it’s got elevated fields that go different levels. The fans can stay in one place and do not have to move from one place to another. We are going to have vendors and other service providers in place. They will not have reasons to move up and down.”
FMU signed a partnership with former State Minister for Water Ronald Kibuule (owner of Mzuri Africa) to try and see that for many more events they can use Mzuri.
Dipu described the event as “safe and ideal.”
“My hopes are very high, and they are persuading me to join the race. And may be I will declare in future,” said Kibuule.
“Mzuri is an African setting meant for tourism. And I have seen Motorsport has greatly pushed tourism, and that’s why I have accepted their request. And we are ready to provide the best services we can.”
