UCU Canons edged UPDF Tomahawks after two game-deciding plays from Peter Sifuma in a Tusker-lite sponsored NBL thriller at Lugogo.

Trailing by a point, Sifuma finished off a sweet move with a lay-up with five seconds to go, and then came up with a clutch block at the near-buzzer to help UCU steal a hard fought 61-60 win.

The win saw UCU protect their unbeaten run to five games while UPDF Tomahawks suffered their second loss having earlier fell to City Oilers last week.

It’s the second clutch win for UCU who came into the contest on the back of a similar 51-49 victory over KCCA Panthers.

Their Women team, the UCU Lady Canons, also showed character when they won late in overtime against KIU Rangers two days ago.

Those three wins, characterised by incredible efficiency in clutch situations, underlines how good a coach Nicholas Natuhereza is.

UCU Win Thriller

On Friday, UCU initially looked like they were easily walking away with a victory after leading 30-22 at halftime, but a hard-fighting UPDF battled back into the contest.

UPDF trailed by just two points, 42-44, after the third quarter, and a fourth quarter surge saw Baker Kyambadde’s troops lead by 7 points midway through the last quarter.

And it looked like UPDF were on course for a stunning victory as UCU all of a sudden struggled to find their offensive game.

The Canons slowly closed down the game but Daniel Emong laid up to give UPDF a one-point lead with just nine seconds, before Natuhereza called a UCU timeout.

In-bounding from the left, Jerry Kayanga was picked but the known-shooter found space and attacked the basket before deciding to feed Sifuma who made no mistake but to drill in an easy two.

UCU led with one, five seconds to go – UPDF Timeout.

Wilberforce Pirwoth inbounded to Okello David who drove across the baseline before elevating for a lay up, but Sifuma made a one-hand block to deny Okello!

As the buzzer sounded, UCU Canons went in wild celebrations but UPDF contested to the umpire as they thought that Okello was fouled when he made his driving lay-up but their cases fell on deaf ears.

Sifuma finished the game with 13 points and 9 rebounds while Ibanda Lwabaga scored 14 points for the Canon City.

Arthur Wanyoto led the way for UPDF with 15 points, Wilberforce Pirwoth and Bernard Okumu reached 13 points each.

UCU return to action on Saturday against Power, the same team UPDF will face on Sunday. UCU will play Victoria University on Sunday.

Speaking of Victoria University, the newcomers remained winless after a 57-80 defeat against Our Saviour to succumb to their fifth loss of the season.
