Uganda Slated To Host Two CECAFA Tournaments In 2022

Uganda will host two regional tournaments in 2022, the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has confirmed.

The first tourney will be the CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship due May 22 to June 5th and the inaugural zonal qualifiers for the CAF Pan Africa Schools Cup.

The Cecafa senior Women championship returns to Uganda for the second time after the first in 2016 which was won by Tanzania who beat Kenya 2-1 in the final.

The 2016 edition was the revival tourney after the inaugural championship in 1986 in Zanzibar.

Rwanda and Tanzania hosted the 2018 and 2019 editions respectively.

The 2021 tourney that was to be held in Djibouti was was cancelled after the Djiboutian Football Federation withdrew from hosting due to ongoing work of the El Hadj Hassan Gouled Aptidon Stadium.

Kenya are the defending champions (2019) but are unlikely to defend their title after a recent FIFA ban.

Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Tanzania, South Sudan, Zanzibar are among other countries expected to come in Kampala for the tournament.

FUFA is yet to confirm the venue(s) for the tournament that comes on the back of successfull hosting of Cecafa U20 Women Championship in Njeru last year amidst Covid19.

Uganda Crested Cranes will use the tournament to prepare for the 2022 African Women Cup of Nations in Morocco in July.

Per CECAFA website, Ethiopia will host the AFCON U-17 qualifiers.

Sudan who have not hosted any CECAFA competition for a long time now will host the AFCON U-20 qualifiers.

Tanzania will host the CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers, CECAFA U-23 Championship/AFCON U-23 qualifiers and the CECAFA Kagame Cup.
