Preview: Hosts Looking Forward to Consolidate Their Stay At The Top
After two weeks break off the league due to their players’ engagement in National duties, table leader vipers come back in action at Kitende against yet another red zone dweller Mbarara City in their quest to lift the league title.
Venoms last appeared in UPL action on 16th last month with a comfortable 2-0 win against Busoga United and they are looking forward to capitalise on that long break to extend their lead on the table to 9 points gap.
They are currently on 49 points from 21 games, yet to lose any match since second round and they have only lost once at home this season which was 2-0 defeat against URA in late November last year.
Assistant coach Marcelo Cardoso says his side is coming into this one with one common objective of winning the title despite having a strong opponent lies in Mbarara.
“For the two weeks, we had training based on physical fitness and technical side and we are in good shape, good motivation as we continue to follow our main objective of winning the league title,” Cardoso said.
“We have a strong opponent, we know their capacity, and its never going to be easy for us but we have our strategy and we expect our team to have the ball as much as possible, create opportunities and pressing the opponent in the final third.”
Its also going to be a huge emotional test for Hilary Mukundane who will be facing his former pay masters for the first time.
For visitors who are on the verge of facing relegation for the first time since joining the top flight in 2017, are yet to register a single win since second round.
To prove how poor they have appeared this season, they are yet to record even a single slim away win this season.
However, the Ankole Lions, is among the teams which give Venoms hard time at Kitende, and its one of the few teams who fetched all the three points at St Marys last season.
They have only lost ounce in four visits paid at Kitende, and that 2-0 loss came way back in their debut season in 2017.
In order to take revenge, the Ankole Lions need to revisit their 2-3 win at Kitende last season in May, when they came two goals down courtsey of Solomon Okwalinga, Bashir Mutunda and Jude Ssemugabi second half goals to cancel Yunus Sentamu and Paul Mucurezi’s first half goals.
