Police 1-0 Gaddafi FC (Omondi Stadium, Lugogo)
Juma Balinya scored the all important goal as Police FC edged Gaddafi FC to storm the last 16 of this year’s Stanbic Uganda Cup.
The forward scored in the 65th minute of the game to ensure that the Abdallah Mubiru coached side earned a place to the next stage.
In the opening exchanges, it was a closely contested affair as the Visitors looked a more composed side.
Gaddafi had the Lions share of the ball but failed to create any clear cut chances despite their dorminance.
But Police grew into the game before the interval – Emmanuel Mugume saw his effort hit the cross bar before Balinya was denied in a one-on-one with goalkeeper Mutebi.
At the restart of the second stanza, Police started the better side and could have scored first but Eric Ssenjobe’s long range effort from outside the area was well saved by goalkeeper Mutebi before Marvin Oshaba missed from the rebound.
The introduction of Herman Wasswa and Muwada Mawejje brought more life as they started opening up going forward.
And finally with five minutes past the hour mark, Balinya pounced home from six yards after Gaddafi failed to defend from corner.
After going a goal down, the visitors tried to make a come back as they launched more attacks but again missed a couple.
They had two good chances to score but substitute Bithum Ronald missed when on close range off a well delivered cross from Charles Ssebutinde before Richard Basangwa had an effort cleared off the line.
Despite the endless attacks from the opposition, Police held on and defended tirelessly to see that they progress to the next round.
They now join other Uganda Premier sides that include Wakiso Giants, UPDF, Onduparaka who have already sealed a place to the next stage.
Tipsa, Kataka FC, Iganga Young, Mbale Heroes are the other teams who already at the round of 16 stage.
