Vipers needed a late goal from Yunus Sentamu to overcome Kigezi Homeboyz in a Stanbic Uganda Cup round of 64 match played at Kabale Municipal Stadium.
The third division side, Kigezi Homeboyz, proved resilient and were on course to force shootouts before Sentamu struck from outside the box with just three minutes on time.
Coach Roberto Oliveira named a strong side for the match with only Paul Mucureezi and Denis Mwemezi the only two changes from the team that played in the league against Arua Hill.
But the hosts were solid and defended tiresly in a game watched by a sizeable crowd.
Sentamu had earlier seen Volleyball saved by the goalkeeper in the 76th minute of the game.
Livingston Mulondo missed a chance to head Vipers home early in the opening exchanges after a good delivery by Dissan Galiwango while Denis Mwemezi and Cesar Manzoki also came close in a cagey affair.
This was one of the two pending Round of 64 matches, the other being Super Eagles Vs Villa.
Vipers, who are the defending champions having beaten BUL FC in last year’s final, will visit Kalango FC on February 26 in a Round of 32 affair.
