Team Uganda has expressed readiness ahead of the forthcoming Badminton All Africa Senior Championship.

Uganda will host the tournament at the Lugogo indoor Arena in Kampala due February 14-20.

Simon Mugabi, the Chief Executive of the Uganda Badminton Association, confirmed that Uganda have a strong team of 12 players – six men and as many women – to represent the country.

The men’s team comprises of Brian Kasirye, Israel Wanagalya, Friday Atamani, Amos Muyanja, Kenneth Mwambu and Paul Makande

The women contingent has Husina Kobugabe, Tracy Naluwooza, Fadhila Shamika, Rajab Natasha, Sharifah Wanyana and Brenda Awori.

The team that will be coached by William Kabindi, has Ivan Karimunda and Annet Nakamya who are assisting in training.

“We expect a much better performance from the concluded Africa Mixed tournament,” said Husina Kobugabe.

“We are a strong team, the moods and spirits are very high. There is a lot of team work in training and everyone wants to win.”

The tournament received a major boost from City Tryres, under Mandela Group of Companies, that have provided Trophies that will be given to winners, and other necessary support.

“I want to thank Mandela group for the good job they are doing for Badminton and Sports in general,” Mugabi said.

“They are a big company and do associate with transparent bodies and as Uganda Badminton Associate we are proud to be part of their associates.”

About 17 countries (Men and Women) will take part.

The tournament will act as Continental qualifier for the finals of the World team championships in Bangkok in May 2022, with the winning country in Men and Women earning a ticket to Thailand.

The cream of Badminton on the continent including Nigeria, Egypt, South Africa, Mauritius and Algeria are coming to Uganda.

“And Uganda we are ready for them,” Mugabi added.

Other countries include Ivory Coast, Ghana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, DRC, Cameroon, Syechelles, Madagascar etc.

The draws will be held on Sunday before the team events get underway on Monday.
