Senegal and Egypt booked their places at the semifinals of the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Senegal eliminated Equatorial Guinea while Egypt needed extra-time to overcome Morocco to storm the last four.

Senegal meet Burkina Faso in Yaounde on Wednesday in the first of the two semis before Egypt meet hosts Cameroon at Olembe the following day.

Famara Diedhiou, Cheikhou Kouyaté and Ismaïla Sarr netted the goals for Senegal, while Jannick Buyla Sam scored brought one back for Equatorial Guinea at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde.

Senegal coach Aliou Cissé is quoted by CAF website: “We played a hard-fought game against a good Equatorial Guinean team. We had the mentality to score three goals. We must congratulate the opposing team who were technically capable of creating problems for us.

“We must remember a good victory tonight, synonymous with qualifying for the semi-finals. We have had a very difficult start to our preparations, but we worked well afterwards and today we are gaining momentum. We must not get carried away because against Burkina Faso, it will be a big battle.”

In the 57th minute, Equatorial Guinea looked like they were going to force extra time when Jannick Buyla Sam cancelled out Diedhiou opener, but the Lions of Teranga responded with a bang.

Substitute Kouyate flicked over the Equatorial Guinea goalkeeper to help Senegal regain the lead in the 68th minute before Ismail Sarr bundled in a Sadio Mane cross 10 minutes to time.

Senegal are in search for their first AFCON title after finishing second in 2002 and 2019.

Elsewhere, Egypt came from down to topple a much fancied Moroccan side at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo.

Pharaohs’ Captain Mohamed Salah and substitute Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet scored for the Pharaohs to complete a comeback after Morocco had taken the lead through Sofiane Boufal

Salah, named Man of the Match, said: “I think we played a good game against a very good Moroccan team. My teammates do what is necessary in each game and give everything to go as far as possible.”

“Playing two games in a row with extra-time is not easy, but I can tell you that we are well and we are having a very good tournament”

Morocco were awarded a penalty in the second minute after Achraf Hakimi was brought down by Egypt’s Ayman Ashraf, and Boufal duly converted to give the Atlas Lions a dream start.

But Egypt equalised in the second half and it was none other than Liverpool Forward Salah who rebounded in after Moroccan keeper Yassine Bounou initially kept out Abdelmoneim effort.

Salah later set Trezequet for what proved to be the winner in extra time as Egypt improved from their quarterfinal finish during the last edition on home soil where they were eliminated by South Africa at the same stage.
