AFCON 2021: Senegal Overcome Nine-man Cape Verde To Storm Quarters

Senegal are through to the quarterfinals of the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations after a laboured victory against Cape Verde.

The Blue Sharks finished the game two men down after Patrick Andrade and Josimar Dias were sent off in the 21st and 57th minute respectively.

Then Sadio Mane scored from a well taken freekick just after the hour-mark for his second goal of the tournament.

And Senegal put the final nail in Cape Verde’s coffin when Bamba Dieng in added time as Aliou Cisse’s charges rolled into the quarterfinals.

Both teams observed a minute of silence in respect to the victims after a stampede at Olembe stadium on Monday night.

Senegal will meet winner between Mali and Equatorial Guinea in the Quarterfinals as they look to win their first ever AFCON title after near misses in 2002 and 2019 where they beaten in the final.
