Riyad Mahrez missed from the spot as holders Algeria were kicked out of the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations at the group stage level after a 3-1 defeat to Ivory Coast.
Mahrez’s penalty rattled the post and Sofiane Bendebka’s goal was not enough as the 2019 Winners finished bottom of Group E with just a point.
Franke Kessie set the tone when he scored the opener after 22 minutes to put Ivory Coast in the deserved lead before Ibrahim Sangare and Nicolas Pepe put the game far beyond Algeria’s reach.
In another stunning display, the Gambia beat Tunisia 1-0 in Limbe thanks to Ablie Jallow late goal to send the debutants into the knockout.
