The Uganda Handball Federation has confirmed that two boys junior teams – the U18 and U20 – will represent Uganda at the IHF Zone 5 Championship in Ethipia due February 15-22 2022.
The IHF Championship that was earlier on slated to take place in April, will accomodate 10 countries including Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Sudan and South Sudan.
“We are ready to start preparations this early December so that by February we are ready to hit the road. We need over 70M to prepare the two teams in a non-residential as well as a residential camp,” Uganda Handball Federation president Shilla Agonzibwa Richardson stated.
The Vice President technical Mayanja Willy has confirmed that a technical team to take care of the two teams has already been appointed.
Aziz Yakoubu has been appointed as the head Coach for the U20 team and will be deputised by Kongo Ibrahim.
Ssemujju Frank and Oburu Jimmy will coach the U18 team while Ssempira Micheal will be the goalkeeping coach.
Uganda last competed in the same tournament in 2018 in the Men’s Tournament held here in Uganda while the Womens tournament was held in Zanzibar as Uganda got gold in the U18 and U20.
This comes after the conclusion of the National Handball League that saw Prisons (Men) and Police (Women) emerge as Champions at Old Kampala Sports Arena.
“We didnt play the league the whole of 2020 and we couldn’t let 2021 go like that,” Augustine Mugalu Secretary General UHF commented.
