Preview: Express, SC Villa Renew Rivalry in Traditional Kampala Derby

Defending champions Express FC will host rivals and record winners SC Villa in what promised to be a thrilling Kampala derby at Wankulukuku.

Express FC will fancy their chances at home and against a side a youthful Villa side that is still piecing together their puzzle.

It has been a mixed start for the Red Eagles who lost their opening two league games and saw coach Wasswa Bbosa banned after the infamous accusations against his CEO Isaac Mwesigwa.

They have collected seven from a possible nine points in their last three games and look like a side that has turned a corner.

However, their dangerman Eric Kambale is yet to hit the ground running but the return of winger Godfrey Lwesibawa who will be facing his former side looks timely.

“We have had enough time to correct our mistakes during the international break, we’re looking for our first league win at home,” Express coach Bbosa is quoted by the club website.

“We know how important the game is, we respect Villa but we want to earn maximum points. The boys are well prepared and also know what’s at stake.”

The Visitors on the other hand, beat Police before falling to Wakiso Giants having missed the three opening games due to license issues.

Recently, they ushered in Omar Mandela as the new club president while Dan Mubiru has been appointed as the club manager.

The Villa house looks to be in order and there is a semblance of organisation at the front office.

Head Coach Petros Koukouras is back in the country after sorting a few family issues.

“Unfortunately I had to be away for a while and It can happen to anyone. I didn’t have the full week to prepare the team for the game but I think we have done a good job,” Koukouras told The-SportsNation.

“I hear it is the biggest game in Uganda. People talk to me about this derby and how important it is and the rivalry between the two clubs. For us (coaches and players) though, is just one away game like all the rest. We have to follow our plan and do everything possible to win something from this game.

“After the game against Police, I said I was happy with the result but not the performance. After our last game it was the opposite. We know where we are and where we want to reach. Trust me we have a long way to go and it can’t happen over night or in a week. Every day we try to be a little better than yesterday.

“The International break helped us to talk more with the players and settle a few things. We worked on our weaknesses but I can’t tell that it helped us a lot because what we need is more games. In addition two of our most important players, Kenneth (Ssemakula) and Gavin (Kizito) were with the national team. Now we have a very tight schedule ahead and we need to focus on how to keep the players fresh.”
