There is much excitement as the Central Women Rugby 7s kicks off with the first circuit at Kings Park in Bweyogerere this Weekend.
The tournament will have teams play in their tier systems; Tier One consists of senior clubs Thunderbirds, Black Pearls and Avengers while Tier Two teams include Acholi Quarters Rugby Academy, Black Diamonds, Blue Whales, Entebbe Lady Swans, Makerere Ewes, newly formed Kisubi Pacers and Black Opals respectively.
Regina Lunyolo who serves on the board of the Uganda Rugby Union as the Women’s Representative and is the founder of the Entebbe Lady Swans RFC noted: “For the first time, the Women’s 7s will be played as stand alone tournaments to ensure more media coverage so as to improve visibility for women’s rugby in the country.”
“Before, the games were played alongside the men’s 7’s circuits. Having the games on Sundays ensures the whole family can make time to support the Women and that’s very important for the Women’s game.”
Lunyolo who is also the Head coach for the Lady Swans and assisted by Samiya Ayikoru, is confident about the forthcoming games as the team has been practicing and had friendly games against the Ewes of Makerere.
She stated: “I hope that every player will play to the best of their ability since none of them has played in 7s contact game before except for touch.”
The Lady Swans managed to win both of their friendly games against the Ewes of Makerere. This has boosted their confidence for the forthcoming games.
Lunyolo added: “If the Ladies win, it will be a bonus. Our philosophy is we play for fun, friendship and family while using the experiences gained to empower the ladies to be more confident to make positive life long decisions.”
The games will continue to take place on the weekends; 17th at Kyadondo and 24th of October at Entebbe.
