Africa Volleyball Championship: Uganda Beat Burundi In Straight Sets To Storm Quarters

Uganda Volleyball Cranes eased past Burundi to reach the quarterfinal of the ongoing 2021 Men’s Africa Nations Volleyball Championship with a game to spare.

The side won in straight sets 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-18) to claim maximum points at the Kigali Arena.

Uganda have now won two games from as many having beaten Burkina Faso 3-1 on Tuesday.

“We are very excited,” said coach Shilla Omuriwe Buyingo in an interview after the game.

“This game was very important for us to put in the bag. But its not over despite having reached the quarters already because we still have a game tomorrow and the boys know its importance.

“We are going to focus on that (Rwanda game) and see what we need to do as a team.”

Uganda, already guaranteed of a place in the top two of Pool A, will face off with Rwanda in search for a top spot.

Its a big milestone for the Volleyball Cranes who are taking part in the tournament for the very first time.

The sixteen countries are competing in the Championship with the top two teams in each of the four groups reaching the quarterfinals.

If Uganda tops Group A, they will pick the second placed team in Group D that has eight-time winners Egypt, Morocco, neighbours Kenya and Tanzania.

DR Congo awaits at the other end if Uganda finishes second in the group.
