South Sudan are into the quarterfinal of the Afrobasket for the first time on asking.
The youngest African nation achieved the milestone after a thrilling 60-58 win over Kenya Morans at the Kigali Arena on Tuesday.
Kenya’s Taylor Ongwae missed a game winning 3-pointer at the final buzzer as Kenya’s comeback fell short.
Kuany Ngor scored 14 points despite missing all his six-three shot attempts while Mareng Gatkuoth (10 points) was the other South Sudan player to reach in double digits.
Albert Odero (18), Ongwae (13) and Okall Koranga (10) left everything on court for Kenya who are coached by Liz Mills.
South Sudan is the fourth team through from the playoffs after missing an automatic place after finishing second in group D.
Guinea beat hosts Rwanda, Angola eliminated Egypt while Uganda ousted giants Nigeria in the other playoff games earlier.
The above quartet join group winners Cape Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal and Tunisia who qualified automatically to the FIBA AfroBasket 2021 Quarter-Finals earlier.
