Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo will be making a return on track in Tokyo Olympics for the 5000m.
The duo, despite winning Uganda’s first medals at the games, were edged by Ethiopia’s Selemon Barega in the 10,000m who took home gold.
The two are in heat two, while Uganda’s third entrant Oscar Chelimo is in heat one – Top five in each heat and the next five fastest from both heats advance to the final.
Just like the 10,000m, Cheptegei also holds the 5000m World Record (12:35.36) which he set at the Wanda Diamond League in Monaco on 14 August 2019.
Besides the tired legs, Cheptegei’s only worry will be about his form after finishing a distant sixth with a time of 12:54.69 at the Diamond League in Florence this year.
Kiplimo on the other hand, has been terrific this year.
He triumphed at the annual Spitzen Leichtathletik Meeting in Lucerne, Switzerland in a Meeting Record (MR) time of 12: 55.60.
The duo will face huge challenge from Spanish breakout star Mohamed Katir who has set National Records in 3000m, 5000m and 1500m all this year!
The 2016 Olympic silver medallist Paul Chelimo from the United States is another star to watch.
No room for error for the Ugandan trio.
