Uganda’s trio of Prisca Chesang, Sarah Chelangat and Esther Chebet will be targeting a place in the finals of the 5000m women at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Chesang, just 17, will be joined by Chelangat in heat one while Chebet has been placed in heat two.
The youngster is one for the future and showed a glimpse of her ability with an impressive time of 15:05.39 last month in Hengelo.
The top five in each heat and the next five fastest from both heats will qualify to the finals.
Chelangat’s personal best at the distance is 15:00.61 and just like the other two, she might be required to double her efforts and run under 15 minutes if she is to have a chance to qualify.
She failed to make the finals at the 2019 Doha World Championships when she posted 15:19.90.
Chelangat won two gold medals at the 2018 Youth Olympic games in Argentina and will be hoping for similar fortunes in Tokyo.
Chebet on the other hand, with a PB of 15:04.89, is stepping up the distance having competed mostly in 1500m.
Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay, Senbere Teferi, Kenyan Hellen Obiri, Agnes Tirop and Netherlands Sifan Hassan are top favourites to take the top places in their respective heats.
