CECAFA U-23 Challenge Cup draw
Pool A: Uganda, Tanzania, DR Congo
Pool B: Ethiopia, Burundi, Eritrea
Pool C: Djibouti, South Sudan, Kenya
Uganda has been drawn against Tanzania and guests DR Congo in a three-team Group A at the forthcoming CECAFA U23 Championship.
The draw for the CECAFA U-23 Challenge Cup was drawn on Tuesday afternoon.
Ethiopia will host the regional tournament in the town of Bahir Dar, with the tournament set to kickoff on July 17th.
The tourney was initially scheduled to kickoff on July 3, 2021 before it was pushed for two weeks.
Cecafa has asked all member Associations to send teams to the tournament with US$20,000, the assiciation’s website has confirmed.
The teams from Somalia, Sudan, Rwanda and Zanzibar will not take part.
The Kobs, in preparations for this tournament, held a training camp in Saudi Arabia where they played two friendlies with their U23 National team.
Uganda drew the first before losing the second 2-0 at prince Faisal Bin Fahd Stadium in Riyadh.
Weighing up on the team’s two games, coach Morley Byekwaso stated that they need to “continue sharpening our attack so that we dont miss many chances” before the tournament start.
Uganda are the defending champions but this year’s competition will be played by Under-23 teams of the member associations.
CECAFA stated that all players of the teams must have been born on or after 1st, January 1998.
However, teams have been allowed to field not more than three over age players.
