Express FC chairman Kiryowa Kiwanuka says that the Red Eagles will not be just participating but competing at the CAF Champions League.
Express FC, who were declared Uganda Premier League Champions, will represent the country at the 2021/22 CAF Champions League.
The Red Eagles will be making their first appearance at CAF’s elite club competition since 2012.
Then, Express beat Tanzania’s Young Africans but failed to make the groups after falling to Caps United (Zimbabwe) in the first round.
The league title and Continental appearance is big achievement for the club that beat relegation on last day of the 2017/18 season.
“We have not reached where we want to be but we made some strides,” said Kiwanuka in an interview with Bukedde FM
“I believe that I do not have anyone in the club who is going to participate or go on tour on the continent, everyone is going to do his role, and am certain we will fulfil them.
“I talked to my players before, tasked them to perform their duties and I also made my own pledges. And I will fulfil them. We will not just participate but compete on the continent.”
Only KCCA FC have made the group stages of the competition in its current format.
KK added: “Everyone will perform his role to see that we compete. Everyone knows his or her role at the club. And all that move together, If I do not get enough money for the the players, they will not execute well as expected. We will do our best”
Playing at the prestigious competition comes with a lot of investment and KK ignored the question of the club’s financial muscle to play at CAF Champions League.
When asked on how much they have on the club’s bank account, KK said: “I do not know the money on Express account, that is not my job. That is the work of the CEO (Isaac Mwesigwa). He is in the best position to answer that.”
