FIFA Suspends Chad After Government Interference

The Bureau of FIFA Council has suspended Chad with immediate effect due to Government interference, World Football governing body has announced.

This comes after Chad government disbanded their nation’s football association last month.

Then, the Country’s ministry of Youth and Sports took away powers and responsibilities from the Chad Football Association.

“The Bureau of the FIFA Council decided to suspend the Chadian Football Association (FTFA) with immediate effect due to government interference,” FIFA has stated.

“The suspension was prompted by the recent decisions of Chadian government authorities to permanently withdraw the powers delegated to the FTFA, establish a national committee for the temporary management of football and seize control of the FTFA’s premises.”

FIFA says that the suspension on Chad will be lifted once the relevant government decisions have been repealed and the FTFA and its management, led by President Moctar Mahamoud Hamid, have confirmed to FIFA that the FTFA premises are again under its control.

The world governing body has also suspended Pakistan.

Chad, who has never qualified for World Cup or AFCON, are ranked 178 per the latest FIFA rankings that were released on February 18, 2021.

On 22 March 2021, African football governing body (CAF) disqualified Chad due to government interference.

Consequently, their two final AFCON qualifiers matches were cancelled and awarded as 3-0 wins for their opponents.

They hence finished bottom of Group A with just one point, in the same pool where Mali and Guinea qualified while Namibia finished third.
