Cranes Depart For Malawi Ahead Of Decisive AFCON Qualifier

The Uganda National Men’s Football Team, the Cranes have departed for Malawi ahead of their final Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The Cranes are slated to take on Malawi in a do or die contest on Monday evening at the Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

A contingent of 36 personnel departed the country on Sunday morning aboard Uganda Airlines Chartered flight.

Only 23 players made the trip with the rest that have been training with the team, not making the trip.

Fahad Bayo, Timothy Awanyi and Patrick Kaddu have been left behind due to injury. Elvis Bwomono returned to the UK as he could not travel to Malawi because of COVID-19 restrictions.

Uganda is attempting to reach the AFCON finals for the third successive time since 2017.

Following the goalless draw at home to Burkina Faso on Wednesday, Abdallah Mubiru’s side enter the final round of matches in second spot with eight points, one ahead of Malawi.

Burkina Faso top group B with 9 points and have already sealed a spot at next year’s finals in Cameroon.

The Cranes require only a point in Blantyre to book their ticket in Cameroon while Malawi must win.
