South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns have reached the knockout phase of this season’s CAF Champions League.
The sundowns became the first side to storm the quarter finals thanks to their 1-0 win over TP Mazembe in a Group B game.
The game at Loftus Versfeld pitted together Uganda Cranes stars Denis Onyango (Sundowns) and left back cum winger Joseph Ochaya (Mazembe).
Lebohang Maboe scored the all important goal in the 27th minute when he slotted home after collecting from Themba Zwane.
The victory sends the 2016 winners to 12 points as they qualify with two games still on the card.
Wydad Casablanca qualified to the Quarterfinal despite picking a goalless draw with Guinean outfits Horoya.
The other side that have reached the knockout stage is Esperance who edged Zamalek 1-0 with Hamdou El Houni on target.
Tanzania’s Simba put one leg into the quarterfinal after a commanding 3-0 win over Al Merreikh (Sudan) to top Group A with 10 points.
Two teams from each of the four groups will qualify to the Quarterfinal before the draws held on April 30 2021.
The first and second legs of the Quarterfinal will be played on 14-15 May and 21-22 May respectively.
