Masaza Cup: Gomba Stage Comeback To Oust Bugerere

Gomba fought back to beat Bugerere 2-1 in a third quarterfinal game of the ongoing Masaza Cup at FUFA Technical centre in Njeru.

Second half goals from Charles Bbaale saw Gomba reach the semifinal.

Bugerere had taken the lead through Tonny Kiberu but the 2006 beaten finalists could not hold on for a needed win.

Gomba will face Busiro in the semifinal on Thursday while Bulemeezi wait on winner between Buddu and Mawokota.

Gomba are in search for a record extending Masaza Cup fifth title – They won it in 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2017.

The record holders were made to dig deep for the victory after Bugerere dominated the first stanza.

Bayo came close to opening the score-sheet for Gomba in the 36th minute but missed from tap-in with his effort going wide.

Gomba were made to rue the missed opportunity four minutes later when Bugerere powered in a shot that eluded goalkeeper Francis Anguzu.

After an improved second stanza, it took 15 minutes from the restart for Gomba to level matters thanks to Bbale who scored from a well crafted corner.

In the 66th minute, Bbaale sentq Gomba into the lead from another corner and the side held on for the victory.

They could have put an icing on the cake but Jackson Semugabi missed a keeper-to-beat that could have made it three for Gomba.
