Uganda Cubs All Out To Defend CECAFA U17 Title

Uganda Cubs will be seeking to defend their CECAFA U17 Championship when they face Tanzania in a final at Umuganda Stadium in Rubavu, Rwanda.

Uganda Cubs needed a late Oscar Mawa strike to overcome Djibouti 1-0 to storm the final while 10-men Tanzania edged Ethiopia 4-3 I’m shootouts in the other semis.

The two countries have already booked their seats at the 2021 AFCON U17 Championship set in Morocco next year.

Uganda are the defending champions of this CECAFA U17 Tournament – The Cubs beat Ethiopia 3-1 in a final at National stadium, Dar es Salaam in August 2018.

Samson Kigozi and a brace from Idd Abdul Wahid saw Uganda lift the title.

Uganda had beaten Tanzania 3-1 in the 2018 semis.

“We have played Tanzania many times, so it will not be an easy game game,” Coach Hamza Lutalo has said ahead of the final.

“We have prepared well and we hope to beat them. We want to defend this title.

“Against Djibouti (semis), it was a very tough game but we did all possible to see us through, the boys did what they were supposed to do.”

Uganda beat Kenya 5-0 in the first group game before easing past Ethiopia 3-0 to reach the semis.

The Cubs will bank on Oscar Mawa who has netted six goals in the championship while Travis Mutyaba will shoulder the creativity burden.

Tanzania target revenge after their U20 side lost 4-1 to Uganda Hippos in the CECAFA U20 Championship final recently.
