Shorthanded Vipers Seek Miracle In Sudan

Vipers will be without quality in depth when they take on Al-Hilal in the return leg of their CAF Champions League Qualifying preliminary round.

The Venoms travelled without key players including captain Halid Lwaliwa after reported positive Covid19 tests.

Karim Watambala, Milton Karisa, Abraham Ndugwa, Livingston Mulondo and Geoffrey Wasswa all tested positive while Allan Kayiwa is nursing an injury.

Consequently, the club put youngsters from the concluded CECAFA U20 Championship on plane to join the team in camp.

Najib Yiga, Joseph Dhata (South Sudan), Bobosi Byaruhanga and Aziz Kayondo are the youngsters who joined Fred Kajoba’s side afterwards.

Bakhet Hamid’s goal in the 26th minute at St Mary’s Stadium Kitende handed Al-Hilal a 1-0 advantage ahead of Sunday’s return leg.

Vipers will need a 1-0 win to force extra time, or any other victory to progress.

Vipers lost 2-1 in 2018 to El Merreikh in Sudan but later overturned the deficit with a 1-0 win at Kitende to progress to the next stage.
