Long-serving CECAFA General Secretary Nicholas Musonye has stepped down from his position, it’s official.
Musonye has been at the body for the last 20 years.
He confirmed that he will joining politics with reports saying that he is targeting Kakamega gubernatorial seat in 2022.
Musonye, who was speaking to the press in Uganda, however revealed that he will remain to oversee the transition of office responsibilities to the new CECAFA members.
“We have done properly and smoothly, am not leaving today, am still around and in any change over I have done my beautiful 20 years and I don’t think I can continue another two or one year, so am going to work with the new team for proper transition,” he said.
“As you know this is an organization which requires proper transition. We have new statutes, we have new board members and we need to work as a team and make sure we have a proper handover and transition and new office in place so that there is no vacuum.
“In the new statutes, we have changed the format, we have two presidents and two board members and the post of secretary general is no more, now there is director general as a new post which has replaced secretary general.”
About the time flame of the transition, We are going to have a meeting in next one or two months and make a decision.
On whether he leaves with his head high, Musonye commented;
“I Am Very happy because no one else can organize this kind of competition, who else can do this? tell me, its only us (CECAFA) in Africa and I want the new people coming in to do the same – to continue making CECAFA what it is because without competition CECAFA is blank.”
