City Oilers edged the second half but were punished for their slow start by Mozambique’s Ferroviario Maputo on match-day two of the 2020 BAL Qualifiers in Kigali, Rwanda.

Maputo ran riot at the start, making an opening 12-0 run in the opening quarter and set the tone for their 92-87 win.

It took a Jordin Mayes’ freethrow for Mandy Juruni’s troops to make their first basket, ending a barren opening spell of 4 minute and 33 seconds.

Oilers shot 37% from the field in the first half to trail 37-46 but closed the game and led at various occasions in the subsequent two quarters before Maputo broke away and held on to their laboured win in a game that could have gone either way down the stretch.

Mayes scored 27 points from 8-of-13 shooting from the field, while Robinson Opong and Ivan Lumanyika added 18 and 12 points in a losing effort.

Alvaro Calvo Masa led the way with a game high 32 points and Helton Ubisse contributed 21 for Maputo who also had two other players – David Canivete (15) and Baggio Chimonzo (14) – score in double figures.

Oilers, who got a walkover against Kenya’s KPA, will have to beat South Sudan’s Cobra on Thursday to confirm their place in the semis.
