*JKL?? 63-56 KPA??
Flavia ‘Flirsh’ Oketcho led by example as JKL Lady Dolphins stunned KPA to win the 2019 Zone Five Championship on Saturday in Dar Ed Salaam.
JKL were buoyant going into Saturday’s final after beating Equity in the Friday’s semi to qualify to the FIBA Africa Championship on first attempt.
However, after losing to KPA57-58 in the group, the odds were stuck in favour of the Kenyans who were beaten finalists in 2018.
KPA were in cruise control, holding a five point lead at the break after winning 15-14 and 18-14 in the order of the first two quarters but Mandy Juruni’s team won the third 22-15 and held on to a laboured and deserved win.
Rose Akon collected 15 points and 10 rebounds while Brenda Ekon managed nine points.
Betty Kalanga scored 13 points, Hilda Indasi and Vilma Owino contributed 12 and 11 respectively in a losing effort.
Rwanda’s APR beat Kenya’s Equity Hawks 54-63 in the losers’match to settle for third place while Don Bosco (Tanzania) were given the fair play award.
Flirsh was named MVP, Vilma Achieng (KPA) took the best rebounder accolade, Kalanga was named the topscorer.
