Uganda’s middle distance runners Winnie Nanyondo and Ronald Musagala advanced to next stages of their respective categories.
Nanyondo reached the finals of the Women’s 800M after squeezing through from the semis by the skin of her teeth.
Nanyondo, despite having a strong start, had to settle for a sixth place (outside the required five in her heat) but her time was enough to clinch a one of the two non-automatic qualification spots.
She will be going for gold in what promises to be a breathtaking final against favourites like Great Britain’s Laura Muir, Netherlands’ Sifa Hassan, Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon, Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay and US’ Jenny Simpson.
Nanyondo missed out on a medal in the Women’s 1500M, coming fourth, in a race won by fellow Ugandan Halima Nakaayi.
Musagala advanced to the semis in the Men’s 1500M after coming sixth in his heat. The semis will be held on Friday night with the top five and the two fastest losers reaching finals.
Musagala has been placed in heat two alongside favoyites Poland’s Marcin Lewandowski and Kenya’s Ronald Kwemoi.
