Uganda Cranes goalkeeper and captain Denis Masinde Onyango paid a courtesy visit to Makerere University Child study centre on Friday afternoon where pupils welcomed him like a true king.
He is a king in football circles. No doubt about that.
The visit, was a response to the pupils’ earlier good luck video message they sent to Onyango through veteran journalist Fred Katende Malibu ahead of Uganda’s group game against Zimbabwe.
The placard at the gate that read ‘Welcome Onyango the best goalkeeper in Africa’ and baloons greeted the shot stopper to the premises of the school located inside the University.
He was given a guard of honour as he made his way through a multitude of anxious and happy pupils who were singing their hearts out with joy and love.
“He is the one! yes! Onyango we saw you on TV catching (saving) a penalty,” one pupil, four years of age (estimation) said in excitement.
The students sang songs of praise, made various rehearsed skits before their legend in an event which some of the parents attended.
“We don’t know how much football can change people’s lives, we just want to inspire these young ones to become good citizens in the near future,” Onyango addressed.
“Its an honour for me to be here. Please stay in school. Be hard workers, respect your parents and above all, be God fearing.”
Onyango gave Sh2M to the school, gave all the pupils and teachers Onyango customized shirts which will now be turned into sports wear.
Thereafter, he joined the pupils into a small pitch where his penalty saving skills were tested before a beautiful cake was cit and served.
