Stella Oyella had a nightmare as Uganda’s She Cranes lost 64-32 to hosts England as the 2019 Netball World Cup got underway in Liverpool.
Despite putting up a strong start, Uganda couldn’t match England’s quality and a vocal crowd at M&S Bank Arena who cheered the side from start to finish as the Roses had a start and for their search for the first World Cup title.
Centre Oyella, who plays for NIC locally, was earlier warned verbally for her rough play. She was later sin-binned in the third quarter before another collision with Jade Clarke led to her sent off with six minutes still to play.
“I know the Roses are good but it’s not the start we wanted,” assistant coach Rashid Mubiru told sky sports. “It was a little physical, we came for a competition, not only one game, now we look to tomorrow.”
“There will always be a loser and winner, am very happy for my girls for pushing up to the end.”
Peace Proscovia made 20 goals from her 23 attempts but Uganda failed to control Serena Guthrie, Chelsea Pitman and Joanne Harten at the other end.
England who beat Uganda last year 3-0 in friendly series, shot with an accuracy of 87.7% as they made an extra player count.
Uganda, seeking to finish inside the top three in the group to advance to another round, will return to action on Saturday against Samoa before facing Scotland on Sunday.
