AFCON: Cameroon Face Nigeria In Battle Of Traditional Giants

Saturday, July 6
*Nigeria Vs Cameroon – 7PM
*Egypt Vs South Africa – 10PM

Two of Africa’s most successful footballing nations are set to lock horns in the round of 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The battle at Alexandria stadium will see Gernot Rohr’s Nigeria who have won the tourney three times – 1980, 1994 and 2013 – seek to eliminate Clarence Seedorf’s Cameroon.

Cameroon, the Indomitable Lions as they prefer to be called, have won this tourney five times and the defending champions after winning in 1984, 1988, 2000, 2002 and 2017.

However, as the teams go head to head tonight, history may matter less.

Cameroon who were supposed to host this year’s AFCON have not been convincing but managed to reach the knockout – They beat Guinea Bissau in their group opener before drawing goalless against Ghana and Benin

The side will welcome back Clinton Njie and Gaetano Bong. They will rely mainly on Ajax keeper Andre Onana who has managed to carry his club form to Egypt. He his yet to concede.

Nigeria on the other hand, will look at the armoury of Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi, Leicester’s Wilfred Ndidi among others as they are expected to ring changes to the team that lost to Madagascar in the last group game.

It should be remembered that both sides had strikes about bonus rows.

The Stats:

Cameroon have not beaten Nigeria in any competition since 2000, when they claimed one of their five Africa Cup of Nations trophies with a penalty shootout victory in the final.

The Indomitable Lions have only ever beaten Nigeria four times in 22 previous meetings, but remarkably three of those victories have come in the final of this competition.
