Friendly: Irakunda, Select Team To Test Gazelles’ Credentials

KCCA Leopards point guard Cynthia Irakunda headlines the Select team squad that will play a trial match against Uganda’s senior women national basketball team, the Gazelles.

The encounter will be played on Monday at Indoor Arena in Lugogo, it will curtain raise for the men’s third friendly with the league’s select team.

Both Gazelles and Silverbacks are in preparations for the upcoming FIBA Africa Zone five Championship set on June 26 where Egypt, Burundi, Kenya and Rwanda among others have already confirmed their participation.

Irakunda, the silky point guard turns out for Burundi and will be a bog test for the Gazelles about what is to come.

In the local league (WNBL), she leads the assists table with 66 and second on the steals log with 31, just below leader and teammate Sylvia Nakazibwe (31).

The select team will be captained by KCCA’s Maureen Amoding who has vasty experience after stints with A1 Challenge and UCU Lady Canons. Momo, as commonly known in the basketball circles, has featured for KCCA just six games since return from a marriage leave. Roger Sserunyigo (UMU Ravens) will be the team’s coach.

The select squad has also been beefed up by UCU’s youngsters – Rhoda Naggita, Brenda Kayaga and Rose Akon.

The Gazelles played a closed door practice match at Lubowa with men’s team Namuwongo Blazers where they lost 40-60.

The Gazelles are expected to start with Flavia ‘Flirsh’ Oketcho, Rita Imanishimwe, Jamila ‘Zama’ Nansikombi, Cotton Urysla and Claire Lamunu.
