*Team Select 45-80 Gazelles
(10-20, 12-44, 30-60, 45-80)
Brenda Ekone meant serious business as Uganda’s senior women basketball team played a trial match against the league’s select side at Indoor Arena, Lugogo.
The Nkumba Lady Marines guard replicated her league performance as she posted a game high 20 points in Gazelles’ 80-45 rout.
Ekone came off the bench to shoot 7 of 11 from the field and picked six rebounds as she impressed in a trial match.
UCU lady Canons’ pair of Zainah Lokwameri and Sarah Ageno weighed with 10 points each. Foreign based duo Claire Lamunu (Finland) and Cotton Urysla Kelenza (England) also impressed.
With Coach Nicholas Natuhereza yet to name his final squad, 13 players in camp instead of 12, Ekone might have sealed her place on the team if that performance had anything to do with convincing the selectors.
The coach is expected to drop one of Priscilla Aber (UCU), Sylvia Nakazibwe (KCCA) and Martha Soigi (KCCA).
The select side, despite bossing with some of the league’s best performers like Cynthia Irakunda (KCCA Leopards), failed to give the Gazelles a real run for their money.
Irakunda and Peace Nakirijja scored eight and seven points respectively in a losing effort for Roger Sserunyigo’s coached side.
After going down 10-20 in the first quarter, the select side failed to recover, including a second quarter where they only registered two points, in the game the Gazelles dominated proceedings from start to end.
The Gazelles who are in preparation for the FIBA Zone Five Championship due June 26, will face Rwanda, Kenya and Egypt among others for a ticket to Women AfroBasket Championship.
This was the second and final trial match for the Women team. The side had lost 40-60 to Men’s lower league club Namuwongo (Nam) Blazers in Lubowa.
It should be noted that the Men’s friendly game – between Silverbacks and Select team – which was initially scheduled to be played at 8PM, was called off.
