Afro-varsity Basketball: UCU Crowned Double Champions, Qualify To University World Cup

Uganda Christian University’s basketball teams, the UCU Canons (Boys) and Lady Canons (Girls) have been crowned as the 2019 Afro-varsity 3X3 Basketball champions.

The Mukono-based sides managed to overcome both ISEG university (Senegal) teams in the finals to triumph at a two day event held at USIU – Africa in the city of Nairobi, Kenya.

The men’s team – Isaiah Mabeny Ater, David Deng Kongor, Caesar Adoke and Titus Lual topped pool A after beating Makerere (Uganda), University if Jo’burg (South Africa) and JKUAT (Kenya). The team later liminated hosts USIU 14-11 in the semis before edging the finals.

The Lady Canons on the other hand – Maimuna Nabbosa, Rose Akon, Brenda Kayaga and Sarah Ageno – beat up on everyone in their pool that is USIU (Kenya), UNIDAF (Senegal), KISII (Kenya) and Tech (Kenya). The team beat University of Nairobi 14-11 in the semis before sealing the title with a 13-8 win over ISEG.

As a result, coach Nicholas Natuhereza’s side qualify to the FISU University World Cup at Huaqiao University, from 31 October to 1 November 2019, in Xiamen (China).

Both ISEG teams also join UCU as the four teams (two from each category – boys an girls) that will represent Africa at the world meet.

This is the second time that UCU (girls) team reach the world cup after previously achieving the feat in 2017.

In Nairobi, Uganda was represented by two Universities – UCU and Makerere – as Ndejje did not join with reasons yet to be communicated.
