Uganda’s Netball Club National Insurance Corporation (NIC) have promised to recover their honour in the region.
The side have been flagged off to take part in the East Africa Netball Championship due March 23-31, in Zanzibar.
NIC is one of the four teams to represent Uganda at this meet – KCCA, Prisons and KIU (Men) are the other teams.
Team manager Josephine Uchanda explained that the team is ready to win:
“The girls have worked hard, prepared for a good long time and am sure that they will go and bring the trophy home.”
The team is leaving for Zanzibar on Wednesday evening, and expected to arrive on Friday.
Betty Namukasa is the new captain and will be assisted by Joan Nampungu – The pair takes the armbands from Rachael Nanyonga and Martha Soigi.
“We expect nothing but victory because we have trained well,” vowed captain Namukasa. “We are going back this time with new tricks, good players and good coaches and people should the best from NIC.”
Stella Oyella returns to the squad after a spell with Prisons team, and she is expected to bring with her experience among others.
NIC have won the East Africa Netball Championship for a record 18 times but have gone four years in a row without winning.
Uganda Prisons have won the last three, in 2018, 2017 and 2016. Ministry of Information and Communication (MOIC) Kenya beat NIC to win the tourney in 2015.
Prisons edged NIC 46-45 in a close final to clinch the title last year in Tanzania.
