JKL Dolphins Sports Club have announced the capture of 2013 NBL Most Valuable Player, Bernard Okumu.
The forward who has signed a 2-year contract with JKL Dolphins Basketball Club, joins from UPDF Tomahawks, where he was a key player, scoring 198 points & grabbing 112 rebounds.
“I think JKL are an organized team with a clear structure & plan,”
Okumu said upon completing his move. “like any other player, I would like to win the championship again, and this looks like a team that is working towards that goal,” he added.
His National Basketball League career has seen Okumu win the championship
once with Power BC (2008), while also playing with Makerere Youth Heaters, Ndejje University, Falcons BC, among others.
When he won the league MVP accolade, he was playing with Vegetarians BC in 2013. That year, he topped the scoring charts with 340 points, while out rebounding
everyone with 214 rebounds!
JKL Dolphins Technical Director Fredericks Owora, said: “He (Okumu) is a young scoring ‘big man’ with huge experience in the league.
He will help us to
improve our finishing, which was a bit of an Achilles’ heal last year.”
Okumu started playing basketball at primary school level at Rev. John
Foundation School, before joining St. Mary’s College, Kisubi (SMACK) where he played all through his high school, taking part in the Sprite Basketball Championships on various occasions.
He then joined Makerere University Business School, where he captained the University’s Basketball team during inter-university games, among others.
He becomes JKL Dolphins’ first addition for the 2019 Men’s National Basketball League, and is expected to debut when they take on Our Saviour BC
on Sunday 14th April, 2019 at 3:00pm at Lugogo Indoor Stadium.
